Did you know...
That our body's nervous system consistent of over 400 nerves, totaling 45 miles? It is one large system, like a highway. Our nerves constantly have electricity running through our system letting us know we are alive. Our nervous system is the most high-tech alarm system in our body letting us know of our surroundings. The electricity ramps up, sending a danger message to let us know there is a threat and pain is produced to protect us. Once the threat is reduced, our nervous system should return to normal and our pain should go away.
One in four people have a nervous system that does not calm down, resulting in long lasting pain because of a hypersensitive nervous system. This can lead to chronic pain impacting normal life. Things we used to participate in, we no longer can because of pain. This is not necessarily caused by an injury or tissue damage but by an extra-sensitive alarm system.
There are multiple factors that can contribute to allowing your nervous system to be hypersensitive. If you are struggling with chronic pain and want to learn more about calming the alarm system down, call to schedule an appointment with our Therapeutic Pain Specialist, Alexis Ordelheide, PT, DPT, CMPT, TPS.
